Toka Lee

Grinzing is a district famous for its numerous traditional Heuriger (wine taverns) and historic villas and streets. Not the first address for a typical Asian restaurant.

Despite the incongruous setting, Toka Lee is a friendly, great-value restaurant serving a range of wok, sushi and noodle dishes. We come here for lunch, where there is an excellent all-you-can-eat buffet for a modest price (around 7 euro a head if I remember right).

The buffet has soup, sushi and maki, spring rolls, noodles and various other rice, meat and vegetable dishes. You can also pick out your own selection of raw meat and vegetables and have them cooked on the spot and brought to the table with your choice of sauces.

There's a garden area in summer which has a small play area (with slide etc.) that's hidden behind a hedge so guests can eat undisturbed while the kids entertain themselves.

The staff are friendly, attentive, and (unlike many Vienna restaurants) quite happy to have children around. We have managed to spill orange juice all over the floor, something that usually produces scowls and disapproval among Vienna's catering staff.

Not so at Toka Lee, where they didn't bat an eyelid and were almost apologizing to us for having to clean up the floor around our table.

Summary: not a place for the classic dining-out scenario, but great value. Especially for families looking for a decent bit of Asian cooking. The Mittagsbuffet is highly recommended!
