Burgtheater - visitor information

Elsewhere I’ve written about the Burgtheater’s history and highlighted a few fascinating facts about the building. But you’ll want to know a little about experiencing the place face-to-face.

You’ll find the theater on Vienna’s Ring, opposite the Rathaus (town hall). It’s within a short walk of two subway stations: “Rathaus” on the U2 and “Herrengasse” on the U3. Three tramlines serve a tram stop right outside the front door: lines 1, 2 and D. The stop is called “Rathausplatz, Burgtheater”.

The performances are all in the German language, but if that’s not an issue, tickets go on sale as of the 20th of each month for the following month and for the first five days of the month after that. But note that there are no performances in July and August.

The ticket offices in the theater itself are open every weekday from 8am to 6pm, and from 9am to midday at weekends and on public holidays. Tickets are also sold in the evening when a performance takes place, where you can get a 50% reduction on tickets for a show that starts within the next hour.

Each day at 3pm you can take a one-hour guided tour of the Burgtheater in English and German. There’s an additional tour at 2pm in July and August.
