- Mattiellistraße 2-4, 1040 Vienna
(The embassy is moving in November 2021 to The Icon, Gertrude-Froehlich-Sandner-Straße 2, 1100 Vienna. I’ll update this article as soon as I can after the move.)
How to get to the Australian embassy
The embassy on Mattiellistraße is easily reached by tram, bus or subway:
- Tram line D to Gußhausstraße (3 minutes walk) or line 1 or 62 to Resselgasse (a slightly longer walk)
- Bus 4A to Lothringerstraße (3 minutes walk)
- U1, U2 and U4 subway lines to Karlsplatz station (6 minutes walk): take the Resselpark exit from the station
You should probably see flags marking the entrance. The embassy shares the building with New Zealand and the offices of other organisations (including the European Investment bank).
The Australian embassy is right next door to the Karlskirche church, where a lift takes you up into the church’s dome so you can examine the ceiling paintings up close (and get good views across town).
Another neighbour is the Wien Museum (the city history and art museum).
Go north and you’ll soon enter Vienna’s old town. As you cross the Karlsplatz area, look out for Otto Wagner’s beautiful station pavilions. If you have embassy business around late November and December, you’ll find the park at Karlsplatz transformed into a huge Christmas market.
